Simple Steps to Prevent Fuel Card Fraud for Fleet Managers

Modified on Tue, 3 Dec at 2:58 PM

Fuel fraud is a big problem for fleet managers. With fuel prices already high, losing money to fraud can be a disaster.

How to prevent fuel card fraud:

  1. Separate PINs for each card: Give each fuel card its own PIN that only the cardholder knows. This way, if there's fraud, you know who did it.

  2. One fuel card per driver: Assign each driver their own fuel card. Sharing cards makes it hard to track who bought fuel for which vehicle.

  3. Set limits on each card: Set spending limits on your fuel cards. This can control how much can be spent daily or what type of fuel can be bought.

  4. Keep an eye on your spending: Use My Fleet Hub to monitor transactions. If you see anything odd, report it right away.

  5. Stop lost or stolen cards immediately: If a card is lost or stolen, stop it on My Fleet Hub or contact support for help.

Preventing fuel fraud on the road:

Fuel providers have measures like CCTV and fraud teams to catch unusual activity. But drivers also need to be careful:

  • Always lock your vehicle and take documents, including fuel cards, with you.
  • Don’t leave your keys with service personnel.
  • Plan your stops at safe parking lots.
  • Keep documents and cards with you when resting in your vehicle, and lock it from the inside.
  • Report any signs of burglary or tampering immediately.
  • Check that you have your cards before setting off.
  • Stay alert to anyone watching you or your vehicle.
  • Report any attempts to scan your card or persuade you to sell it.
  • Protect your PIN and cover the keypad when entering it.
